Customising how Jiten looks

Most of what you can change about how Jiten looks is in one panel, Display Settings. On desktop it is the gear button at the top-right, in the header. On mobile it is the Display button at the bottom of the hamburger menu.

Each change is applied immediately to your current page. These settings are stored locally in your browser and are accessible without any account.

The main controls

• Titles Language: Japanese, Romaji or English. Changes the default title displayed on media. If no English title is available, then it will displayed in Romaji anyway.
• TTS Voice: Change the artifical voice playing next to words and exampel sentences. The speaker button next to it previews the voice. System is your device own voice, which can be pretty good depending on your operating system or browser.
• Display Furigana: Whether to display the furigana above the words or not.
• Hide Vocabulary Definitions: hides the English glosses when browsing vocabulary lists. Useful to test yourself.
• Master in 1 click: makes a plain click on the green + master a word instead of opening the menu. Ctrl+Click still blacklists. Only shown when you are logged in.
• Unblur all NSFW sentences: example sentences are blurred when their text matches a list of adult vocabulary, no matter where they came from.

Trimming down media pages

Media page sections is a collapsed row. Click it and seven checkboxes appear: Hide coverage borders (logged in only), Hide genres, Hide tags, Hide relations, Hide descriptions, Hide external ratings and Hide alternative titles. This can be useful if you don't care about some info and find the media cards too busy

6 of the 7 apply to the full media card, which is what you see on a title's own page and in the card view of a list, and do nothing in the compact and table views. Hide coverage borders is the exception: it removes the coloured coverage outline everywhere, including compact rows, table rows and the franchise views.

Reading speed

Reading Speed (chars/hour) is where you enter an estimate of your reading speed. It will then reflect in the Duration estimate on novels, non-fiction, visual novels and web novels.

Difficulty format

Difficulty Style gives you the options of Name only (the default), Name and value, or Value only. Difficulty Value Style shows the number as 0 to 5 (the default), giving 3.2/5, or as a Percentage, giving 64%. With Name and value the two combine into Average (2.4 /5).

Kanji labels

Kanji breakdown scale sets the small badge on each kanji in a Kanji breakdown block, which appears on word pages, on SRS cards, and in the results on the parse page. Choose JLPT (the default), Jouyou Grade, Kanken, WaniKani, RTK, KLC, TMW or None, and the badge reads JLPT N5, Kanken Level 10, WaniKani Level 2 and so on. None removes the badge.

The kanji grid on your profile has its own grouping dropdown with a different set of options.

Light/Dark Theme

The theme button sits next to the gear on desktop, and next to Display in the hamburger menu on mobile, and is represented by a moon or a sun. It starts on Auto, following your device. You can switch it to dark or light theme.

Display controls that live elsewhere

• Card View, Compact View and Table View are chosen from the buttons above each media list. That choice is also per browser.
• What an SRS card shows, and its own furigana toggle, are in Settings → Study (SRS). Those are stored on your account, so they do follow you between devices. See Using the SRS.
• Definitions you hide on an individual word page are stored on your account too.
