Status, log progress & reread

The little flag just got more powerful. While a media is in progress, you can now easily mark the subdecks (volumes/episodes/etc) as read with the little + button in Log Progress. You can also set a precise char count or % of a deck you're through, or even go over 100% if you find that Jiten's length is too short of you've reread some passages. You can also start a reread through the Reading History, and this will show up in your total count in the profile!

The features will try to do their best to fill your start and end date depending on the actions you do, but you can change them at any moment in the history. This will show you how many characters you read per day if you have the start and end set, as well as the coverage you had on the media when you finished.

Lastly, you can backfill these dates from a new tab in the media list import from VNDB and AniList.

The "paused" status has also been added.

Franchise view

The franchise view has been revamped with some display options, a brand new series view, a series being a part of a franchise. Series are mostly manual right now so a lot of them will be missing inside franchises, don't hesitate to suggest them. From this new series view, you can select a series, filter by media type, and you study a whole series or franchise as if it was a single deck, combining all their words.

• Thanks to all your difficulty ratings, the algorithm has been adjusted. You'll see most difficulty move up or down 0.1-0.3 points, in general closer to the consensus
• Added a new study setting to choose your review order. This only change the order of the review you have the same day.
• The old study order by global frequency will now follow your rank source when set in settings > vocabulary
• Added the sentence unlock order download option for Anki deck with Jiten+
• The study session summary screen now shows your retention for this batch instead of the pass rate
• The reschedule preview will now show the amount of reviews you'll get in the next 7 days
• Added a setting to deactivate the vibration on swipe on Android
• Added colours to example sentences during study when the display option is turned on
• Added an option to hide synonyms and see also under the advanced layout of definitions during study
• The confusable readings during study will now take into account vowel expansion to avoid spoilers
• Longer example sentences should now flow better on smaller screens
• The buttons in the study summary are now pinned to the bottom for easier access
• Fixed a bug where the reschedule preview was wrong
• Fixed multiple bugs affecting colours in example sentences
• Fixed a bug where tooltips wouldn't close on mobile

Developers: The anonymous rate limit is now set to 120 requests per minute, the API key authenticated requests are still at 300req/min

Community forum

The forums have opened, you can access them from Community in the header. You can access them through your Jiten account and will be prompted to choose your display name the first time signing in. They are perfect for long term discussion as well as preserving them as it's public and will be indexed. Come say hi!

Example sentences for video

Example sentences are now available for anime, dramas, movies and YouTube, made possible with a new trained model that can recreate the missing punctuation in subtitle files.

Display settings

The display settings are now saved in your account, and you can have multiple profiles of them to switch on the fly on different devices. There's now a dedicated page in the settings with a lot more options such as font settings, the size of headwords, as well as a complete customisation of the media cards: you can now reorder any of the stats or hide them.

Reworked the media sort option

The media sort options have been redesigned since they were growing out of control. They're still all there, but in a more compact format now.

i+1 & furigana

During your study, an i+1 tag will be shown next to example sentences where the word you're studying is the only word you don't know. Your main example sentence and the first few ones will also be an i+1 sentence when available.

Furigana are now available over all the words in example sentences. You can configure which ones to show in the new display settings. Be careful, there's also a setting in the SRS that takes priority.

Jiten+ - Sentence comprehension

There's now a 3rd green bar under your coverage: it's the percentage of sentences you can read in this media (n+0), and the n+1 sentences if you hover it and in a lighter shade. If you don't see it yet, just refresh your coverage.

In the media list, you have access to a new sort option: i+0 (you know every word) and i+1 (1 unknown word).

In the media detail page, you have access to up to i+3 for that media, and if you head to See sentences stats, you have access to even more data: the readable sentences per episode/volume (or over the length of the text), the list of words which will unlock the most new sentences you can understand, a graph comparing learning in that order vs by most frequent in the deck and finally a list of i+1 sentences for the top words.

From this page, or when making or editing a media study deck, you now have acces to a new Sentence Unlock order, which will present to you the words which will unlock the most new sentences first.

Jiten+ - i+N sentences for a word

You can now, under any vocabulary page, find up to i+3 sentences under the new "Sentences you can read", for the word you're currently looking at

Other changes

• Updated JMDict & JMNedict to the latest version, dozens of parser fixes, all decks have been reparsed
• Expressions with particles will now show their word composition (with particles excluded)
• YouTube karaoke transcript are now on the size instead of under on smaller screen size. You can toggle between the two
• You can now set up a display name in your account settings, or it's set the first one you log in into the forums. It's only used in the forums for now but will be used for social features in the future so choose wisely
• Added a preview for FSRS reschedule
• Fixed a bug where you couldn't review the mistakes you made the same day
• Fixed a bug where study more & recent mistakes took your review limit into account

• Added the new FSRS-7 memory algorithm which handles same-day reviews better and can schedule within hours precision. If you've optimised before, you're still on FSRS-6 and need to opt-in in your settings. If you're never optimised before, you're on FSRS-7 by default. It will eventually be on for everyone after I get enough feedback on it! Please tell me if you've tested it and your impressions.
• Added kanji stroke order (from KanjiVG) and animation inside kanji detail pages
• Added kanji composed of ("components") and kanji containing X inside kanji detail pages
• Added import of jpdb decks as word lists and redesigned the JPDB import interface
• Added multi-select to media list filters status (for example ongoing or completed)
• Study: added an auto-bury feature, that buries the word for a day after a number of failure you set in the settings
• Study: all decks equally now persist your current position between batches, so you get cards from all your decks if you have a lot
• Study: added support for basic mouse buttons to rebind keys
• Added multiple title checks for media requests to reduce duplicates
• Fixed the redundancies being handled differently between the study deck display and the word picker, leading to some words not being able to be reviewed
• Better mobile controls for the YouTube karaoke, example sentence collapsed by default
• Headwords in vocabulary pages will now scale down on smaller resolutions to avoid long words taking multiple lines

YouTube Decks

The long awaited new media type is here, with more than 3000 videos around 30 channels already available!

You can watch most videos directly on the website (if the creator allows embeds), with a karaoke mode that shows the subtitles in sync with the video with words highlighting based on your knowledge, click for definitions, similar to Jiten Reader. Just open any youtube Deck and find the new video play button under any video or clicking its thumbnail.

You can make requests for new channels in Media Requests, but make sure they contain some manual subs, not auto-generated ones! If you have ideas of features you'd like to be built around that, like a playlist that autoplays, please make me know!

Media Search by Description

You can now search for media using natural language. This is entirely based on the decks actual description, media type, genres and tags, so don't expect anything magical if the description is short!

Popularity Ranking

"Popularity" is now the new & default search order. It is based on a number of factors, such as the view count, the number of people having it in their list, etc. The top 100 decks of any category (if there's enough data) will show a "#x most popular" and you can see some detailed stats by hovering them.

Jiten+: Smart Deck

The Smart Deck is a new experimental feature available to Jiten+ subscribers. It looks at your ongoing titles, optionally the planned ones too, and will serve you a list of new words to study that tries to optimise your learning based on what you're currently immersing in.

For example, if you're watching an anime, it will automatically show you words from the current episode and the next few ones (based on your settings) and this will rollover to the next episodes as you mark them as completed. Let me know how the algorithm feels and if it needs some tuning!

Other Updates

• Updated JMDict and JMNedict and reparsed all decks, make sure to update your frequency dictionaries!
• Added learning and relearning steps in the SRS settings. The default changed from "1m 10m" to the recommended "10m" for FSRS, which slightly change the default behaviour
• Moved the favourite and status button to the front of the card
• Enhanced the dictionary definition search when searching with definitions. It now tries to show you the most relevant results first rather than the most frequent ones
• Enhanced the coverage journey display on mostly flat history and added log visualisation
• Enhanced the subdeck view with multiple view modes, better search and sorting options
• Added a button to clear the leech lapses in the "..." menu of a word
• When importing via AnkiConnect with readings, words that don't have a corresponding reading now get skipped instead of importing the wrong word

• Search now stays focused when clicking the X in a search bar (thanks @asterite for the PR!)
• Fixed an incorrect computation of redundancy for the immersion plans and your coverage, expect about ~0.5% jump in total coverage on your next refresh
• Fixed random card order not working when a target coverage is set or a global frequency deck
• Fixed a bug where the card would get the wrong modality in review if it was first learned in the same session
• Fixed SRS easy days & load balancing not taking into account the timezone
• Fixed new cards eating into your review limit
• Fixed values like difficulty and dialogue percentage not being weighted by the length of the subdecks (only really affects those with wildly different length between subdecks, so few)
• Added fallbacks to the custom audio playback for some browsers

Here's a 7-day trial so you can test out the new Smart Deck SMARTDECK available until the end of the month, use it in settings > Jiten+. You can use it even if you've taken part in a previous trial.

• Fixed label abbreviations that didn't show the full name in the tooltip (example: form/formal)
• Fixed all definitions of a word appearing gray when reading restrictions are present

Next Up: YouTube decks will be added, you can already make requests for those. Accepting full channels or specific playlists. They need to have manual subs, and not auto-generated ones, and the focus will be first on longer ones or ones that have at least a significant amount of speech (> 10 minutes per video avg).

The poll on the community forum also has positive results, so I'll be working on that. It won't replace the Discord, but give a place to people that are not on it as well as a way to have conversations searchable and indexable on the web in the long term. This won't affect the Discord in any way and it'll continue to work the same way as it does now.

Frequency Upgrades

As often requested, you can now view the frequency by media type of any word. There's several ways to go at it:

• On any vocabulary detail page, you'll find a small chevron (v) next to the frequency, that you can click to see a breakdown for all media type, as well as your saved frequency lists with Jiten+. You can click one of them to make this your default, and it will then show everywhere on the website and in Jiten Reader and JitenMPV, replacing the global rank.
• In a vocabulary list, if you set the sorting by Global Frequency, you'll then see a new box where you can change the rank source (this one is temporary)
• In your Settings > Vocabulary, you can change the Frequency Source

You can also now create a deck from these frequencies instead of just the global ones, as well as from your custom frequency lists if you have Jiten+.

Media List Upgrades

Under your settings, you will find a new Media List feature where you can import your media lists directly from AniList, VNDB or a previous export. You can also export your full list to JSON or CSV.

The import is filled with filters so you can easily import exactly what you want, for example only the manga and not the anime, or you can set a start date if you used to watch anime in English, and set exactly the status you want to import.

For AniList, if you have an ongoing title, you can also mark the individual episodes/volumes as finished (with the limitation that they must be on Jiten and that there's no gap in-between the volumes).

On top of that, in your profile > media list, you can now bulk edit it like removing multiple titles at once or changing their status.

Other Updates

• Added community polls which is a way to gather you guys opinion anonymously on future things, or just get to know you better. There's currently 2 polls, go vote!
• Redesigned the media cards for a slimmer profile able to fit more on screen at once and a bit less rainbow-y while keeping all the info present
• Added an option to refresh an individual deck's coverage under the burger (...) menu of any deck
• Added buttons to change the font size for custom dictionaries
• Added a slider to change the TTS volume
• Added buttons on the immersion plans to add the decks to your study list directly with the correct amount of occurrences
• You can now easily pick decks from your media list when creating a custom frequency list
• Added a voted on tab in the media requests
• General website optimisation, page loading, especially cold, should be a bit faster
• Redesigned the guest homepage to better reflect the current Jiten features + added a features page
• Fixed a bug causing media with furigana (mainly novels) to have an higher difficulty than intended, you might see it go down on novels from the last few months
• Fixed an issue where the difficulty adjustment wouldn't show the sign if it was exactly 0.1
• Fixed the play order when using custom audio (now always headword > custom > example sentence if all 3 are on)
• The omnisearch is now focused by default on the homepage

Card Archives

Until now, card you were forgetting or that were being automatically replaced (redundant etc) were completely deleted along with your review history. From now one, they will be put into an archive, which will allow you to easily restore them and their entire history if you've made a mistake, as well as keep them counting for your stats, your study streak and your FSRS optimisation. You can find your card archives under your Settings > Vocabulary > Recently Removed You can also restore them in 2 clicks on a vocabulary page of a card that has been archived, via the ... menu

Expanding Redundancy

Redundancy is also being expanded. In your Settings > Vocabulary you'll find a new "Derived & Related Words" section. It combines multiple types such as potential/passive forms (見る → 見られる), **honorifics **(酒 → お酒), for a total of 11 categories. You can activate those you want to be counted as redundant, depending on your level of knowledge and your learning style. You can easily see the full list of words, and the direction of the redundancy: some are bidirectional but a lot are also one-way, because the base words often covers more meaning that its derived forms. You can toggle them on and off without losing any data, as long as you don't manually remove the redundant card (which will be sent to the archive then), so feel free to experiment! There's also a new Redundant Forms > Check my vocabulary button that can help you clean up your old cards in a click. If you find yourself having to review words that should be redundant, you probably need to remove them (they will be put into archive) from there.

Jiten

Jiten is now officially out of beta! This doesn't change anything and the site will continue being developed at the same pace, it's just that all the features I imagined when I started working on it are now available and polished.

• New guides page containing guides covering in-depth most features of Jiten. Tell me if you notice errors or things you'd want to be covered!
• Added "What's new" on the website to see the latest updates (same as on discord but text only)
• You can now hide individual definitions from the default dictionary in any vocabulary page. They will be grayed out in vocabulary page and completely hidden in the SRS

SRS

JitenMPV is a plugin for Jiten bringing you the power of Jiten Reader directly in your favourite media player. JitenMPV is free & open-source https://github.com/Sirush/JitenMPV. It is currently in beta and only thoroughly tested on Windows, you help to test other versions would be appreciated!

Jiten+

Jiten+ is a premium subscription that will offer you some perks and allow me to continue working fulltime on Jiten. Available for 5€/month or 50€/year, with a 150€ lifetime offer available until the 31th August 2026. Jiten+ subscription are done on the website through Stripe. Current ko-fi/github/patreon are still available but are donations only if you want to give an extra, they won't grant Jiten+ subscription. Jiten's core is still free and will continue to be, Jiten+ is a way to offer more features to power users and features that would have been too costly to add otherwise. If you ever stop subscribing to Jiten+, you will keep your uploaded media, you just won't be able to add more.

Here's the launch feature list of Jiten+, with more to come in the future:

• Upload images, animated images and audio to words, that you can see on the word page or during SRS. Max. 1 image & 1 audio per word form. 10GB of storage space alloted (300MB during trial) which is enough for tens of thousands of cards.
• 5 requests boosts a month, equivalent to 5 votes, so your requests have a chance to be fulfilled faster
